List of Certifications for MBA graduates

Many of the MBA students/graduates find themselves in dilemma whether to do further certifications during or post MBA. As per the latest industry trends, certifications from reputed institutes do have weightage and act as differentiating factor at the time of job interviews. In this article, we try to bring you bird eye view of the all the major certifications available across different specializations.

Everything starts with your core area of interest. Doing an MBA from top B-Schools has its advantages like you will be exposed to subjects from different specializations during 1st year. Students are expected to identify interest areas and accordingly choose elective subjects during second year.

If you are interested in Finance, then completion of CFA (Level 1, 2 and 3) or FRM (Level 1 and 2) will come in handy at the time of placements as well afterwards. Private Equity, Investment Banking and consultancy firms are some of the top sectors who heavily recruit candidates with CFA or FRM.

If you are interested in Systems/IT then Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) will help you get a foothold in IT management and related types of roles. Typically, those who finish PMP will be placed in key managerial roles and in areas like project management and project delivery.

If you are interested in Consultancy/Process re-Engineering then Six Sigma Green Belt Certification will help you move up the ladder.

Those interested in Operations and Supply Chain can look at CSCP(Certified Supply Chain Professional) and CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management).

For HR profiles, HR Certification Institute (HRCI) offers two certificates namely Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) certification and Professional in Human Resources (PHR) Certification. Having additional certification is always advantageous either in Indian context or globally.

What About Marketing

I feel Marketing to be more of an art than science. Text book rules may not lead to complete success in a Marketing environment. Companies also prefer guys with relevant field experience than the one with certification. So for Marketing I haven’t come across any proper certification from Indian context. Certified Marketing Management Professional (CMMP) is there but not sure of its effectiveness in India. We need more data to comment on CMMP from Indian context. If interested, some of you can try Dale Carniege Institute’s Courses and Seminars

So, at the end it all depends on what area you want to enter, there is always a certification that is up for grabs. Be sure of what you want to do by end of 1st year of MBA. Because you will be hard pressed for time once placement season starts at B-School.
