IIM Ahmedabad Selection Criteria

Understanding the selection criteria for IIMs have become cumbersome and time consuming. There are many instances where students feel that if they have lower academics then IIMs, especially the older ones, don’t call for second stage. In this series of articles, we try to bring you the key points to concentrate while trying to understand IIM Ahmedabad selection criteria.

Selection Criteria of IIM Ahmedabad

Eligibility:

The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (in case of the candidate belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Differently Abled (DA) or Persons with Disabilities (PWD) category, this is relaxed to 45%). A candidate appearing for the final year examinations is also eligible.

Selection Process

Selection for admission to Post Graduate Programme in Management of IIM Ahmedabad consists of 3 stages.

IIM Selection Stages

 CAT: Common Admission Test

AWT: Academic Writing Test

PI: Personal Interview

Stage-I (Appearing for CAT)

In Stage I, candidates have to apply online for CAT and appear for the online exam. In this stage, IIMs gather all the requisite information from the candidates related to past academics, work experience, details of various degrees etc. Once the candidate appears fot CAT then stage – II starts.

Stage-II (Selection for AWT and PI Round) for Normal Candidates

In Stage-II, IIMs including IIM Ahmedabad apply various criteria to select and call the candidates for AWT and PI round.

1st Criteria for Stage-II selection:

Candidates have to clear the following section-wise cutoffs as well as overall cutoff:

IIM Ahmedabad CAT percentile Cut-offs

2nd Criteria for Stage-II selection:

Candidates have to clear the following cut-offs based on average of 10th and 12th marks (All figures in %):

IIM A Academic Cut-offs

3rd Criteria for Stage-II selection:

Based on area of study during degree course, only candidates whose marks are in the top 20 percentile i.e., minimum 80 percentile are eligible.

Once all the above 3 criteria are met, then composite score is calculated and candidates were called in the descending order.

Calculation of Composite Score

Based on 10th, 12th and degree marks, different weightage were assigned:

IIM A 10th Class Academics Weightage

IIM A 12th Class Academics Weightage

In the following table,

AC-1 refers to Medical and Surgery related fields

AC-2 refers to Selected Professional Degree like CA, CS, ICWA

AC-3 refers to Commerce, Finance, Economics and Management related degrees

AC-4 refers to Engineering degree

AC-5 refers to Science, Nursing and Agri-based areas

AC-6 refers to Arts, Humanities, Fashion Technology, law and rural studies

AC-7 refers to Any other discipline

IIM A Degree Marks Weightage

Application Rating Score (AR) = Sum of A, B and C above i.e., sum of weights assigned to 10th, 12th and Degree marks.

Normalized AR Score = AR/(Average of top 50 candidates AR)

For getting a call from IIM A, following formula is used:

2016-08-04_20-00-15

Whereas Normalized CAT overall Score = Candidate’s CAT Marks / Overall CAT Marks.

The merit list is prepared based on Composite scores and candidates will be called for Stage-II of AWT and Personal interview.

  • Overall Cut-Off: Minimum 90 percentile

2nd Criteria for Stage-II selection:

IIM A Exceptional Performers Degree Cut-Off

If the number of candidates, who got more degree marks than cut-off, are more than 100 then only top 100 candidates are called for interview or top 1% in each stream, whichever is lower. Here the reservation criteria don’t apply and calls will be made purely on merit basis.

The number of Candidates called for second stage in CAT 2015 is as under:

2016-08-04_20-00-53

 * Non reservation basis but I have done backward calculation to get the demarcation details

Stage-III Final Selection

At IIM Ahmedabad, getting a call is difficult and once that is achieved then almost all the candidates will have more or less same footing. Consider the following formula used for calculation of final composite Score for the batch 2016-18:

2016-08-04_20-01-08

Overall weightage given at Final Selection Stage (all scores are calculated on Normalised basis):
