IIM Calcutta (IIM C) is one of the few institutes which used to give less weightage to past academics. In this article, we try to under stand IIM Calcutta Selection Criteria for admission to its flagship programme, PGP in Management. Further we analyse whether IIM C is continuing past trend of giving less weightage to academics.
The candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (in case of the candidate belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Differently Abled (DA) or Persons with Disabilities (PWD) category, this is relaxed to 45%). A candidate appearing for the final year examinations is also eligible.
Selection Criteria of IIM Calcutta
IIM C follows a 3 stage process for selecting candidates to its PG Programmes.
(CAT: Common Admission Test, WAT: Written Ability Test and PI: Personal Interview)
Stage-I (Appearing for CAT)
In Stage I, candidates have to apply online for CAT and appear for the online exam. In this stage, IIMs gather all the requisite information from the candidates related to past academics, work experience, details of various degrees etc. Once the candidate appears for CAT, then stage – II starts.
Stage-II (Selection for PI Round)
In Stage-II, IIM C apply various criteria to select and call the candidates for WAT/PI round.
1st Criteria for Stage-II selection:

The weightage given to past academics had gone from 30% previous year to 40% now. A maximum of 50 Marks are awarded to students who are shortlisted based on above table. A merit list will be drawn and students will be called in descending order. Let us understand each parameter in-depth as under:
A maximum of 28 marks are awarded under this. Students scaled score in CAT 2016 will be used for computation of this index.
10th and 12th Marks
A maximum of 10 marks each will be awarded to candidates who got more than 80% in X and XII. No normalization is applied here, simple scores will be used for allotting points. Following tables provide a complete overview of different marks allotted to candidates with varied range of scores.
2 marks will be awarded to candidates to girl candidates to promote gender diversity.
Stage-III (Final Selection)
Candidates who are selected based on above parameters will further be tested on Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview. In WAT, a topic will be given and candidates are asked to pen their thoughts in 15~20 minutes followed by participation in Personal Interview (PI) . In PI, candidates will further be evaluated based on their academics, work experience, personal and professional achievements etc. The Final weightage given for admission to PGP in IIM Calcutta is as under:

Past academics are not given any preference in final selection even though it is used as parameter during selection for interviews. So, those with low past academics can target IIM Calcutta by performing well in CAT and subsequent WAT/PI rounds.
