IIM Visakhapatnam Selection Criteria

IIM Visakhapatnam (IIM V) was established in 2015 at Visakhapatnam and has an in-take of 48 students in its flagship programme, PGP in Management. Currently IIM Bangalore is mentoring IIM V in areas of curriculum design and course structure, research and faculty sharing. In this article, we try to understand IIM Visakhapatnam selection criteria.

Selection Criteria of IIM Visakhapatnam

Selection for admission to Post Graduate Programme in Management of IIM Visakhapatnam consists of 3 stages.

IIM Selection StagesAbbreviations: (CAT – Common Admission Test, AWT – Written Test called as Note Writing, PI – Personal Interview)

Stage-I (Appearing for CAT)

In Stage I, candidates have to apply online for CAT and appear for the exam. In this stage, IIMs gather all the requisite information from the candidates related to past academics, work experience, details of various degrees etc. Once the candidate appears for CAT then stage – II starts.

Stage-II (Selection for PI Round) for Normal Candidates

In Stage-II, IIM V applied various criteria to select and call the candidates for PI round.

1st Criteria for Stage-II selection:

Candidates have to clear the following section-wise cutoffs as well as overall cutoff:

IIM Vizag CAT Cutoffs

E-Mails were sent to candidate’s registered mail IDs, around April 15, 2016, requesting them to confirm their interest in pursuing admission from IIM V. Post confirmation, 2nd criteria stated below applied to them.

2nd Criteria for Stage-II selection:

Candidates have to secure top 10 percentile marks in their respective boards for 10th and 12th examination. IIM V used IIM Bangalore’s previous 2 years students database to determine top 10 percentile marks. So candidates have to secure top 10 percentile marks in their respective board examinations to be eligible for getting an interview call from IIM V.

3rd Criteria for Stage-II selection:

Based on the area of study during degree course, graduation score get adjusted and again a candidate has to be in top percentile to get an interview call.

Once all the above 3 criteria are met, then following weights were given to different parameters and a score is calculated for interview purpose only. Candidates were called in the descending order of Score. Candidates with professional course like CA/CS/ICWA were given additional 5 points whereas people with a maximum work experience of 3 years would be given 5 additional points. However, only maximum score among qualification or work experience was considered and scaled to 10 points to get the final weightage under this parameter.

Category Weight
CAT Score 20
10 th Marks 15
12 th Marks 10
Graduation 15
Gender Diversity 1
Professional Course / Work Experience 10

Stage-III Final Selection

For final selection candidates, who were qualified, had to submit a detailed application including statement of purpose, Semester/Year wise marks in graduation, copies of academics and work experience certificates and other reservation based eligibility certificates. Those who submitted detailed application within the stipulated time were called for further evaluation.

Those candidates who appeared for IIM Bangalore AWT/PI round need not appear as their AWT/PI scores at IIM B were used by IIM V for their final selection. Similarly, those who appeared for WAT/PI rounds of IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode also need not appear for stage-III of IIM V as their average scores obtained at WAT/PI rounds of these institutes were used by IIM V.

Those candidates who did not appear for WAT/PI rounds of above institutes have to appear for Stage-III process evaluation by IIM Vizag. In this, further evaluation was done based on the following:

  1. Note writing
  2. Personal Interview
  3. Quality of work experience

Students have to write a note on any socio-economic, political and other matter within 20/30 minutes timeline and attend the personal interview. Interviewers may also evaluate a candidate based on note writing and other parameters. During interview stage, candidates will be evaluated further on quality of work experience. A maximum of 7.5 points were awarded for Note content and 7.5 for Note style. 20 points were awarded for personal interview.

So, the allocation of different weights for final selection may be as under:

Category Weight
CAT Score 20
10 th Marks 15
12 th Marks 10
Graduation 15
Work Experience 5
Note Writing (stage-II) 15
Personal Interview 20

Among new IIMs, IIM Visakhapatnam followed the toughest selection procedure in line with their mentoring institute, IIM Bangalore. Currently IIM V classes were getting conducted in one of the oldest and world known universities in India, Andhra University. New campus construction is underway and expect the same to be completed at the earliest. For those who are not familiar with Visakhapatnam, it is the most industrialized city in Andhra Pradesh and boasts of mega public and private sector units, a port and shipyard, headquarters of eastern naval command etc. All these provide ample opportunities for candidates to have good industry interaction. So, if someone got admissions from new IIMs (those who were established in 2015), IIM Vizag fares better in terms of location and mentoring institute.
