IIT Delhi MBA Selection Criteria

Department of Management Studies (DMS) was established in 1997 by IIT Delhi. DMS currently offers Masters in Business Administration through Common Admission Test (CAT). In this article, we try to understand IIT Delhi MBA selection criteria.

DMS (IIT Delhi) Admission Criteria

DMS followed a 3 stage process for selecting candidates to its PG Programme in Management based on CAT 2015 scores.

  • Stage – I: Appearing for Common Admission Test (CAT)
  • Stage-II: Based on profile score i.e., including CAT Score, past academics and others etc, candidates were called for Group Discussion and Personal Interview round
  • Stage-III: Final admission based on composite score

Stage-I (Applying and Writing CAT)

In Stage I, candidates have to apply online for CAT and appear for the exam. In this stage, IIMs gather all the requisite information from the candidates related to past academics, work experience, details of various degrees etc. Once the candidate appears for CAT, then stage – II starts. IIMs have no role in selection of candidates for DMS.

Stage-II (Selection for GD/PI Round)

Candidates have to clear the overall cutoffs as decided by the institute. DMS followed profile based selection criteria instead of going for pure CAT based selection approach. The information available is very limited in the public domain and we tried to capture the information through previous year WAT/PI experiences of successful candidates.

Last year, DMS called candidates even with a low overall percentile of 90. This clearly shows that candidates with excellent academic and other extra curricular/work experience record can expect a call even if their CAT scores are modest. On an average , candidates were called for round-II with a CAT score of 97 and above percentile. Total number of seats for 2016-18 batch is approx 120.

Stage-III (Final Selection)

Candidates who were selected based on above parameters were further tested on Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview. In personal interviews, candidates were evaluated based on their functional knowledge, work experience, general awareness, assessment of leadership skills, personal and professional achievements.

Our Final Words

DMS has one of the best MBA programmes among IITs and is considered to be one of the top 25 B-Schools in India. The fee component is comparatively lower at approx. Rs. 4.0 Lakh for entire 2 year programme. DMS relies on strong brand value of IIT Delhi for driving its placements and industry interaction. So those who are looking at options beyond top 10 B-Schools should keep DMS in their sights.
