VGSOM Selection Criteria

Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSOM) was established in 1993 by IIT Kharagpur. VGSOM offers Masters in Business Administration with an intake of approximately 110~120 candidates. VGSOM is one of the few institutes to use only CAT scores for selecting candidates for Written Ability Test and Personal Interview round. Last week, we discussed selection criteria of SJMSOM (IIT Bombay) and Department of Management Studies (IIT Delhi). In this article, we try to understand VGSOM selection criteria.

VGSOM (IIT Kharagpur) Admission Criteria

VGSOM followed a 3 stage process for selecting candidates to its PG Programme in Management based on CAT 2015 scores.

IIM Lucknow Admission Process

(CAT: Common Admission Test, WAT: Written Ability Test and PI: Personal Interview)

Stage-I (Applying and Writing CAT)

In Stage I, candidates had to apply online for CAT and appear for the exam. In this stage, IIMs gather all the requisite information from the candidates related to past academics, work experience, details of various degrees etc. Once the candidate appears for CAT, then stage – II starts. IIMs had no role in selection of candidates for VGSOM.

Stage-II (Selection for WAT/PI Round)

Candidates who had minimum 60% (55% for SC/ST Category) marks in past academics were eligible for selection for second stage provided they had cleared the overall CAT cutoffs as decided by the institute. Merit list was drawn and VGSOM called candidates in the descending order. Last year minimum cutoffs stipulated by VGSOM for interview calls were:

  • For General Category, CAT 2015 overall cutoff percentile was approximately 90
  • For Non Creamy layer (OBC),  CAT 2015 overall cutoff percentile was approximately 80.0
  • For Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Categories, CAT 2015 overall cutoff percentile was approximately 75.0

Stage-III (Final Selection)

Candidates who were selected based on above parameters were further tested on Group Discussion, Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview. In WAT, a topic was given and candidates were asked to pen their thoughts. WAT was used to test candidate’s grasp on the content, vocabulary and structuring of thought process while putting the essay together. In personal interviews, candidates were further evaluated based on their functional knowledge, work experience, general awareness, assessment of leadership skills, personal and professional achievements. The Final weightage given for admissions to MBA in VGSOM were not available in public domain as institute did not spell out the details.

However, we compiled the data based on social media inputs and selected candidates interview experiences and following details provide broad indication of how admissions were given:

  • CAT Score – 20%
  • Profile (Past academics, work experience and others) – 20%
  • Group Discussion plus WAT plus PI – 60%

Though we cannot verify the authenticity of final weightage parameters, it should provide a broad idea on how VGSOM selects the candidates for its MBA programme.

Our Final Words

VGSOM has the best MBA programmes among IITs and is considered to be one of the top 20 B-Schools in India. The fee component is comparatively lower at approx. Rs. 7.2 Lakh for entire 2 year programme. In addition, VGSOM did not consider non Engineering candidates for admission to its MBA except those who had masters degree in Science or Commerce with bachelors in Maths/Statistics, so all those with Engineering background should seriously consider VGSOM as the competition is relatively low. Having said that, VGSOM relies on strong brand value of IIT Kharagpur for driving its placements and industry interaction. So give your best shot at CAT and try for VGSOM. All the best.
